WHAT IS MONTESSORI?
Dr. Maria Montessori described the Montessori Method as an “aid to life.” In the early 1900’s, she developed her philosophy of education based upon her intuitive observations of children from a diverse array of cultures. She then used these principles of human behavior to create an educational program that would belong to all peoples.
The 3 main objectives to her work are:
-
Human development does not occur in a steady pattern, but in a series of four formative “planes”.
-
Human beings develop in relation to their environment.
-
Human beings require the freedom to follow their individual interests while developing themselves within the “prepared environment”.
Dr. Montessori recognized in children a natural curiosity and desire to learn. All her efforts were centered on this fundamental belief. Her careful study and development of teaching materials and methods were focused on awakening this desire to learn and channeling a child’s natural curiosity into a vibrant and motivating learning experience.
The Montessori method emphasizes and develops the potential of the child by using special teaching materials, a deliberately prepared learning environment, an understanding of the individual needs of the children in the classroom, a focus on independence, and teachers who are trained in the developmental needs of children and in the use of the Montessori methods and philosophy. The focus is on self-directed learning and utilizing discovery rather than instruction as the primary teaching tool.
The Montessori culture is built on the values of independence and respect – independence of thought and action; respect for self, peers, adults, knowledge, and the world around us. Dr. Montessori believed that with confidence and respect, the children will grow into adults who can achieve great things.
